Jose Puron at OGCS: Expertise, Opportunity and an Accelerated Future
For Contract and Procurement professionals such as Jose Puron, working at OGCS is a chance to engage with high-profile projects, learn from top-tier experts, and develop a truly global perspective.
With experience across the oil, gas, mining and energy sectors, Jose has worked on projects spanning South America, West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, and beyond.
Through OGCS Americas, Jose Puron has gained invaluable experience on multiple projects, accelerating his career while supporting major clients.
“My name is Jose Puron. I’m from Mexico. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I’ve been involved with projects all my career,” Jose begins.
“I joined OGCS in 2021. I’ve been working with different customers since then, most of them oil and gas companies, and even one company manufacturing batteries for electric cars.”
A Career Built on Global Projects
Jose has worked on projects across the world. “I’ve been involved in projects in South America, Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, West Africa, North Africa, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Malaysia. And most of the time I've been in the role of contracts and procurement. I’ve focused on different categories, namely subsidy equipment, subsidy installation, EPCI contracts, which cover the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning onshore, offshore and so on”.
Jose specializes in roles ensuring procurement objectives are aligned with business goals, including cost savings, risk mitigation, and supplier relationship management from beginning to end.
“I’ve been on the contractor side and the operator side, in strategic roles and project deployment,” he explains. The variety, he says, has shaped his perspective.
“I’ve always been involved in projects, all my career. Different roles, different companies. All have different ways of doing things.”
Applying the Experience to Mexico
In his latest role at OGCS, Jose is applying this experience to Mexico’s emerging energy landscape. “Now I’m supporting Harbor Energy in one of the first projects they are doing in Mexico,” he says.
“It’s an interesting project, and there are not many foreign operators in Mexico. This is a good opportunity to build a relationship from the very beginning, and our aim is to maintain a long-term relationship, with this client, and with others in the region.”
“We are privileged to be participating in high profile projects”, Jose adds, “We are proactive, we’re engaged and we really care. This is our reputation at OGCS.”
The Promise of AI
When asked about the potential of AI, Jose sees AI already shaping contracts and procurement work.
Jose doesn’t hesitate to describe the potential. “The way I see it, it's a must to use artificial intelligence in conjunction with expertise, with good professional judgment. Adding artificial intelligence is like flying at a thousand miles per hour.”
At the same time, Jose emphasizes the importance of responsibility. “AI can help us a lot, but we must be careful what we wish for. AI has no judgement or experience in the field.”
He worries about the generational impact.
“The next generations are going to grow with AI,” he reflects. “They might lose some of the skills we had to develop because everything will be so fast. We need to be careful not to lose critical thinking, not to lose the human part of the job.”
Balancing Progress
For Jose, the key is balance – embracing the efficiency of AI without letting it replace core human judgment.
“AI is a tool, but it’s experienced people who should be making decisions,” he says.
