We are seeking candidates for the position of HSE Coach and Training Coordinator Specialist, based in Canga, to join the Simandou Project.

Position Overview:

The HSE Coach and Training Coordinator Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a coaching model aligned with Rio Tinto’s Critical Risk Management (CRM) framework and the Safety foundation plan. This role serves as the primary liaison across Port, Rail, Mine Construction, and Mine Operations, ensuring consistent communication, performance monitoring, and capability development.

The role oversees the daily operations of the coaching service provider, supports the upskilling of site coaches and operational leaders, and ensures the effectiveness of coaching tools and feedback mechanisms.

Additionally, the role will be responsible for managing all aspects of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training across the Simandou Project. This includes conducting training needs analysis (TNA), ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal standards, managing and updating training content, and supporting the development of training strategies. The role requires close collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), contractors, content owners, and the RT Simfer Training Team to ensure the delivery of relevant, effective, and high-quality training.

You will be part of the Integrated Management System (IMS) department, providing support in health and safety by building capabilities, behavior, standardizing tools and practices to the different H&S team and Construction / Operations team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coaching program:
    Develop and drive the H&S coaching model in alignment with the CRM operating framework and Leadership in the field, in accordance with our safety foundation plan. Ensure weekly coaching sessions and feedback cycles are consistently delivered across sites.

  • Training coordination:
    Coordinate the development and implementation of HSE training modules in collaboration with internal stakeholders, SMEs, training owners, and the RT Simfer Training Team.

  • Stakeholder engagement:
    Act as the primary liaison between internal HSE Managers and external contractors. Facilitate clear and continuous communication to support coaching activities and risk management integration.

  • Service provider oversight:
    Manage the day-to-day relationship with the coaching service provider.
    Monitor performance, resolve issues, and ensure delivery against agreed objectives.

  • Reporting and metrics:
    Prepare and deliver regular progress reports, including key metrics and performance indicators. Support analysis of CRM performance and coaching impact.

  • Coach development:
    Train and mentor site coaches to ensure consistent application of CRM tools and coaching techniques. Build internal capability and promote a strong coaching culture.

  • Tool deployment and support:
    Provide coaching on HSE tools and systems used in the field. Ensure tools are understood, applied correctly, and contribute to risk reduction.

  • Governance and model maintenance:
    Support the governance and continuous improvement of the CRM operating model. Coordinate pilot programs and trials to test and refine coaching approaches.

  • External coordination:
    Organize and compile required training and documentation for external stakeholders, ensuring readiness and alignment with project standards.

  • Subject Matter Expertise (SME) contribution:
    Deliver training sessions as a subject matter expert when required, contributing technical knowledge and practical insights to enhance learning outcomes.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in HSE, organizational development, or a related discipline

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in HSE roles, including coaching, training, or leadership development, change management

Preferred Attributes:

  • Strong understanding of Rio Tinto’s Critical Risk Management framework and coaching principles

  • Experience working in West Africa or comparable operational settings

  • Proven experience managing service providers and coordinating multi-stakeholder environments

  • Fluent in English and French (spoken and written)

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and reporting skills

  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, developing project contexts

ABOUT THE SIMANDOU PROJECT

The Simandou Iron Ore Project (Blocks 3 & 4) is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is a high-grade, world-class iron ore deposit and represents one of the largest known iron ore reserves in the world.

The Simandou South Project operates under the Simfer joint venture where the Government of Guinea holds 15%, Rio Tinto and Chinalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH), which hold 45.05% and 39.95% of Simandou respectively, continue to work with the Government of Guinea to explore options to develop the Simandou iron ore deposit, as well as potential mechanisms for collaboration on the infrastructure required for the development of the Project and mining operations.
